RARE 19TH C. MAORI BATTLE AXE "pouwhenua"

Origin:  Polynesia, New Zealand, Maori People  (Provenance:  old European Collection)

Period/Date: Early to Mid 19th century

Materials:  Wood, Steel, haliotis  Shell, Red Sealing Wax

Description:  This rare Maori battle axe with English trade Steel head is known as a "pouwhenua" or "turipou".  Its focal point is a beautifully carved complex face with inset haliotis  shell eyes at its handle.  Its dark red hardwood shaft has acquired a gorgeous rich patina from traditional use.  It has not been varnished or waxed.   It is in excellent condition except for some minor nicks and scratches which would be expected.  This weapon comes with a custom wood and metal display base, but to me it looks more impressive on the wall.
