Origin: Melanesia, Solomon Islands, Malaita Island     (Provenance: Acquired from Solomon Islands Collector and Scholar Allen Dunfee, in Georgia)

Period/Date:  Likely Mid-20th century

Materials:  tridacna shell, fiber, shell beads, charcoal pigments

Description:  This "kapkap" ornament is a simple and pure example made from a quality shell with no imperfects.  They were typically worn on the forehead as ornamentation and wealth display.   Note: I photographed it on a borrowed display stand since it does not have its own.
