19TH C. MAORI "KOTIATE" HAND CLUB

Description: This lovely hand club "kotiate paraoa" was used as a thrusting weapon in hand-to-hand combat. Its blade is especially broad with beautifully tapered edges. The expressive head on the handle terminal is complex and fine quality. There is a pierced hole next to the eye for a wrist cord. It shows obvious use and has acquired a deep rich patina turning to red especially on the handle. In fine condition, except for some minor chips along its striking rim. Presented on a custom wood and metal display stand.
