19TH C. MAORI "KOTIATE" HAND CLUB

 

 

Origin: Origin: New Zealand (Aotearoa), Rotorua District Maori People   

Period/Date: 1870-1880

Materials: Hardwood, haliotis shell, sealing wax

Description:  This lovely hand club "kotiate paraoa" was used as a thrusting weapon in hand-to-hand combat.  Its blade is especially broad with beautifully tapered edges.  The expressive head on the handle terminal is complex and fine quality.   There is a pierced hole next to the eye for a wrist cord.  It shows obvious use and has acquired a deep rich patina turning to red especially on the handle.  In fine condition, except for some minor chips along its striking rim.  Presented on a custom wood and metal display stand.
