C. 1800 ENORMOUS COMMUNITY TONGAN KAVA BOWL
Origin: W.
Polynesia, Tonga Period/Date: C. 1800 Materials: Hardwood, Breadfruit sap resin Description: Here's a truly ancient Tongan Kava bowl dating to the Tongan/Fijian war period of 1800. The original patina on this bowl is superb showing a generation or two of use. Two old cracks at the edge were traditionally filled with breadfruit sap resin (a very effective adhesive). This is perhaps the largest Tongan kava bowl you'll ever see on the market. It shows great care in construction which is characteristic of all elegant Polynesian bowls. The interior shows generations of use and kava patination with deep and broad veining in the wood grain. Note: This bowl is one of a pair. See its mate sennit repair! Dimensions: Length 29" (73.7 cm), Width 21 5/8" (54.6 cm) Price: SOLD
