RARE & FINE ELLIPTICAL FIJIAN KAVA BOWL

Origin:  Polynesia, Fiji  (Provenance: Ex. San Francisco De Young Museum- 1980s.  Ex. Sotheby's New York, May 2002, lot 350)

Period/Date: At least first quarter of the 19th century, possibly older

Materials:  Hardwood, Kava patination

Description:   A massive community size kava bowl with an elegant elliptical shape.   A beautiful form carefully hollowed from a single piece of wood.  The walls of the bowl are very thin which is a a characteristic of early quality examples.  The four legged bowl has a flat rim with pointed ends and a pierced lug.  The lug is marked with numbers in old white paint "85/30".   It has acquired a dark rich varied patina from age and use with countless layers of Kava patination on the inside.  In good condition with some old stable age cracks, minor dings and chips which would be expected on a piece this age.  A wonderfully refined and aesthetically pleasing quality example seldom seen for sale.  Compare this bowl to more common round and clunky examples.

A similar example can be seen on page 189 figure 175 of "La decouverte du paradis OCEANIE Curieux, navigateurs et savants" Copyright 1997 Somogy Editions d'art, Paris.
