UNUSUAL KAMBA NAIL FETISH

Origin: E. Africa, Kenya, Kamba People     (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Nova Scotia )

Period/Date: At Least Early 20th century, possibly older

Materials:  Wood, stain, resin, nails, libations

Description:  This rare and superb female figure was not only carved by an accomplished artist but was used as a ritual "nail fetish"!  It has acquired an encrusted patina from long use.  In good condition with one glued mend to the left foot.

Most books and authorities state that Kamba art started with Mutisya Munge and the art was really made for sale to colonial visitors. The conundrum is that figures like this were clearly tribally used.  This could be an important discovery as it may prove the Kamba did produce figurative art for tribal use prior to WW1.
