19TH C. PHILIPPINE KALINGA HEADHUNTER WAR SHIELD

 

Origin:  Philippines, N. Luzon, Kalinga People    (Provenance:  from my personal collection)

Period/Date: Last quarter of the 19th century               

Materials:  Hardwood, rattan, charcoal/ oil paint

Description:  This traditional shield belonged to a "left handed" warrior and was used in battle as seen by its numerous spear impacts.  Its angular shape resembles a stylized human form.   All of its original rattan binding is still intact which is an important feature on these shields.  In good condition with no breaks or loss just the normal dings and dents so often seen on war shields.  A Kalinga warrior can be seen in the last photo holding a similar shield.
