WHIMSICAL INUIT STONE CARVING W/ SEAL BITING A HUNTER

 

Origin: Canada     Provenance:  Ex. collection of Dr. George Alan Solem (curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago).  Dr. Solem died in 1990.  For more information and a complete biography click here  or Google his name.  It is believed that Dr. Solem likely acquired the figure from Wade's Stratford of Ontario in the late 1970's.)

Period/Date: 1950-1960'Ss

Materials:  Black Soapstone/ serpentinite

Description:  This finely rendered whimsical stone sculpture a hunter trying to wrestle a Seal while being bitten in the butt.  It weighs approximately 11 lbs.  It is in good condition with some minor surface abrasions.  The bottom of the base is inscribed "Daniel E. ...." Only the first name is legible.

Dimensions:   Height 6"  (15 cm), Width 8.5"  (21.5 cm)
