NEW GUINEA MIDDLE SEPIK CULT MASK
Origin: New Guinea, E. Sepik Province, Middle Sepik River, Iatmul or Sawos People (Provenance: Acquired from a private collection in the Midwest) Period/Date: Circa 1940s, possibly older Materials: wood, cowrie shell, conus shell, fiber, clay, resin adhesive, lime Description: This intriguing and powerful ancestor mask has a "heart shape" face featuring prominent relief-carved popping eyes. It has a pierced nasal septum with a long projecting chin transitioning into a Crocodile head. Its exact use is unknown, but the Crocodile imagery as a protective totem is incorporated into its form. This suggests that one of its uses could have been by cults seeking supernatural protection of the Crocodile against malevolent spirits. It is in good condition with a dry varied surface. The curved projection from the nose has a patina from handling since it is natural to grab the piece there. Some minor old cracks, loss, and a few missing shells. Presented on a metal display stand.
