Description: A finely carved headrest raising from a round footed "stepped" base with central column supporting a curved platform with side arms. Beautifully incised with triangular decoration framed by concentric rings. Has acquired an oily patina in various reddish orange tones from age and use. One old chip out of the bottom of the base. Used by men during sleep to protect their often elaborate coiffures. A related example can be seen on page 38 plate 12 of "Sleeping Beauties", The Jerome Joss Collection, Copyright 1993
