NEW GUINEA PAPUAN GULF KEREWA GOPE BOARD

 

Origin: S. New Guinea, Papuan Gulf, Goaribari Island, Kerewa People   (Provenance: Acquired from a collection in Queensland Australia)

Period/Date:  Circa 1940's-50's

Materials:  Wood, ocher pigments, lime, and charcoal paint

Dimensions:  Height 60.75" (154 cm),  Width 14"  (35.5 cm) 

Description:   Here's a large impressive Gope Board "hohao" featuring a classic skeletal-like spirit figure with prominent eyes.  Its navel is a focal point on the torso.  As many boards are, this one was cut from the side of a dugout canoe.  The board served as an emblem that conveyed meaning about the clan group.  This one is deeply carved and has a suspension hole on top.  In good condition showing obvious use expect for some pigment loss, small dings and scratches as would be expected.
