MAGNIFICENT 19TH C. GILBERT ISLAND SHARK TOOTH SWORD, 53 INCHES

Origin:  Micronesia, Gilbert Island (Kiribati)  (Provenance: From my personal collection.  Acquired from a San Francisco Missionary Family in 1995)

Period/Date:  Late 19th century

Materials: Palm wood, coconut fiber, human hair, shark teeth, Palm Splath/ Pandanus Fiber

Description:   This example, from my own collection, is remarkable for its scale and amazing condition!  All of its binding is in near perfection condition and it is not missing a single tooth!   Note how it retains its woven fiber sheath-like covering around its tip which reinforced it and helped protect from damage.  It is constructed from a length of tapering Palm wood with two rows of razor sharp Shark teeth inset between thin wooden spines and then pierced and tightly lashed with Human hair and coconut fibers.  Its towering scale makes a strong statement in person.  It is rare to find a sword of this vintage in such a state of preservation!  Presented on a custom metal display stand.

Dimensions:  Height: 53"  (135 cm), Width 4.5"  (35 cm)
