19TH C. GILBERT ISLAND CUIRASS W/ SHARK TOOTH SWORD

Origin: Micronesia, Gilbert Islands (Kiribati) tabiteuea    (Provenance:  Ex. Max Willborg Collection, Stockholm Sweden. Much of Willborg's collection was sold at Christie’s Amsterdam in Dec. 2001)

Period/Date:  19th century

Materials:  coconut fiber, wood, shark teeth, fiber, human hair

Description:  This cuirass has a beautiful contoured hourglass shape and is presented on a custom wood and metal stand.  The low profile neck riser on this example is somewhat uncommon and was likely a personal preference of the owner.    When an islander of Tabiteuea donned  such an armored corset they felt invincible.  They were worn both in fierce combat as well as in local sporting events and games of skill, bravery and initiation.  The sword is in excellent condition and has a single hand guard appendage.

Dimensions:   Cuirass: Height 23.75"  (60.5 cm), Width 18"  (46 cm), Sword: 36" (91 cm)
