Origin: Dahomey, Fon People (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Paris) Period/Date: Early 20th century Materials: hardwood, iron, brass Description: This fine quality ceremonial axe is presented on a custom metal stand (attached at the blade by an industrial magnet? Its craftsmanship is impressive and noteworthy featuring a stylized Leopard or Lion. The skilled blacksmith integrated a whimsical snake into the design of the handle. Note how the metal from the snakes body is inset into the wood as it spirals along the handle! In good condition with an old glued mend to the rear of the body below the "S" shaped tail. An important prestige axe sure to be a welcome addition to any collection of African art or weapons.
