RARE GROUP OF BEAUTIFUL FLY RIVER BARBED FIGHTING ARROWS

 

Origin: New Guinea, Papuan Gulf, South Coast, Fly River   (Provenance:  From an old Australian Collection.  Originally collected by a Crocodile hunter in the 1950's)

Period/Date: First Half of the 20th century

Materials:  Bamboo, lime, Cassowary Bird Bone and Claws, Barbs from a spiny Anteater, wood, natural ocher paints, plant fiber

Description:  These are among the most desirable types of arrows in Melanesia.  There are two sets of 5 (sold separately) each mounted on a custom metal base.  These special fighting arrows were shot from bows that were often 7 feet long!  Their tips are made from Cassowary Bird claws as well as bone.  The wicked ones have barbs from a spiny type of Anteater.  They are in excellent condition, display instantly, and look very impressive in person.
