RARE FANG DECORATED BRONZE PRESTIGE SPEAR W/ RIFLES

Africa, Gabon, Fang or Kota People  Provenance: This is just one of a dozen Fang objects we acquired from the collection of Christopher Wild. Mr. Wild is a British collector living in Notre-Dame-du-Hamel, France.  The Gabon collection was purchased years ago from noted Arms and Armor dealer Michael D. Long Ltd. in Leicester UK who initially uncovered the collection in the countryside.

Period/Date: At least early 20th century, likely 19th century

Materials: bronze

Description:  This rare high quality prestige spear is presented on a custom metal stand.  On one side there are traditional etched Fang motifs and symbols while the other side is decorated with a pair of antique percussion cap rifles and or black powder muskets!  The rifle, a symbol of destructive power is duplicated onto the spear and would have afforded power and protection to it owner.  This would have been a highly prestigious weapon owned by some person of high rank.  It is very heavy and finely made making it a testimony to the artisan's skill, mastery and vision.  Its head is slightly skewed and the tip appears to have been bent and straightened.  It was difficult to photograph but is a warm brown color with mellow patina in person.
