FANG WOVEN FRINGED HANGING STORAGE BASKET

Origin:  Africa, Gabon, Fang People     (Provenance: This is just one of a dozen Fang objects we acquired from the collection of Christopher Wild. Mr. Wild is a British collector living in Notre-Dame-du-Hamel, France.  The Gabon collection was purchased years ago from noted Arms and Armor dealer: Michael D. Long Ltd. in Leicester UK who initially uncovered the collection in the countryside.)

Period/Date: Early 20th century

Materials: Raffia, woven fiber

Description:  I honestly don't know much about the context in which this piece was used.  The finely woven pot-like basket is laden with braided fringe cordage.  Judging from its encrusted soot-like patina it was used inside a house and located close to a fire source.  Condition is excellent.

Dimensions:   Overall Length (not including cord handle) 20"  (51 cm), Width 4.5"  (11.5 cm), Height of Basket 6" (15 cm)
