FANTASTIC RAMU DOGTOOTH ARMBAND W/ FACE
Origin: New Guinea, East Sepik Province, Lower Sepik, Ramu Provenance: Ex. Linden Museum Stuttgart. Collected by Dr. Augustin Kramer in Dallmanhafen (German Neu Guinea) in early 1920's. Kramer was a 19th German ethnologist, author, field collector and expert on Polynesian and Samoan culture in particular. He live and studied in Samoa and authored a number of books. Period/Date: Circa early 1920's or before Materials: rattan, nassa shell, dogteeth, porcelain, trade beads, bush string, ocher pigments Description: This fantastic quality man's armlet features a stylized face (possibly a mudfish) with applied trade beads. Fourteen of the seventeen dogteeth are porcelain from the early German colonial period. It retains an old hand printed tag from the Linden Museum.
