FRENCH ART NOUVEAU CELTIC REVIVAL JEWELED REPOUSSEE BOX BY ALFRED DAGUET
Period/Date: Circa 1895-1900 Materials: Tin, brass, iron, leather, glass cabochons, enamel Description: Although this box may appear to be 2000 years old it is actually the work of the highly skilled Art Nouveau artist Alfred Daguet. He didn't produce pieces in quantity, but his specialty was Celtic themed boxes like this one. Look at the stunning and powerful iconography on this carefully detailed box lid panel! A winged griffin is biting the tail of a stylized cat or Tiger. The same construction techniques he used were employed thousands of years ago. Note how the sides of the box are cut and folded like an envelope with iron rivets. The box is in great condition yet is missing much of its red and green enamel paint on the top panel. At one time it had a leather lined interior which is largely blacked and fussed to the tin. Daguet's work is very distinctive and this particular box appears to be one of the most visually powerful examples he ever made. Similar works of his have sold at Christies auctions for over $11,000.
