UNIQUE MIDDLE SEPIK CROCODILE CLAN TOTEM MASK, NEW GUINEA
Origin: New Guinea, E. Sepik Province, Middle Sepik (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Pennsylvania) Period/Date: Early to mid 20th century Materials: Hardwood, lime Description: This unique mask combines both the face of an ancestor with the scales and teeth of a Crocodile! It is not known what context the piece was used but it appears to be a specific clan mask strongly associated with the "all powerful" mythologized Crocodile. The mask was not worn but was cut from another element like a house facade or drum? It has a pierced nasal septum, delineated Crocodile scales (head and back side) and exposed teeth along the jaw line. It has a warm multi-colored varied patina with areas of encrustation. There is an age crack on the left side of the head but is in otherwise fine condition. Presented on a custom bronze display base. Dimensions: Height 16" (41 cm), Width 5" (13 cm) Price: $1000 Currency Conversion A custom stand may be ordered for an additional fee FREE SHIPPING With (Buy Now) Feature!
