GROUP OF TEN 19TH C. CONGO SPEARS
Origin: Dem. Rep. of Congo, Batelela people (Provenance: Field collected by Gaston Leonard in 1928. Ex. Sotheby's Paris, June 2004, Lot 190 ) Period/Date: 19th-early 20th c. Materials: Wood, steel, copper Description: I seldom purchase spears but the quality of these were so nice that they really make the transition from utilitarian to "ART". The shaft of each is reinforced with beautiful copper coiled wire while the lower half has a slender forged iron point allowing it to be driven into the ground. Each is in fine condition and show rich patinas and long use. Note that the 11th lance-like spear in the center of Sotheby's photos was missing from the group when I acquired it but it was insignificant anyway. Dimensions: Length 67-71"" (170-180 cm), Width 2.5-3.75" (6-9.5 cm) Price: $350 each or all 10 for $3000 Currency Conversion FREE SHIPPING within USA. Overseas buyers please email for quote
