COMPLETE BAMANA CI-WARA HEADDRESS

 

 

Origin: West Africa, Mali  Provenance: Old French Collection.  Letter of Expertise included by Maurice Ratton, Paris 1969 (see paperwork)

Period/Date:  Early 20th C.

Materials: wood, basketry, cowrie shells, fiber, string

Description:  This old ci-wara still retains its original wick work headdress.  It is a well-used piece with the gazelle sculpture has having acquired a dark rich varied patina.  In good condition with no restoration.  Missing a few cowrie shells.  It comes with a copy of a letter of expertise from Maurice Rattan, Paris 1969.
