LARGE ABSTRACT FEMALE CHOKWE FIGURE

 

Origin: Angola, Central Region     (Provenance:  Collected in 1930 by Fritz Haas, Frankfurt Germany, on the Schomburgk Expedition.  Click here for a biography of Fritz Haas).  Ex. collection of Dr. G. Alan Solem (curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago)  Dr. Solem died in 1990.  For more information and a complete biography click here .

Period/Date: Collected in 1930.  Likely circa 1920s

Materials:  Medium hardwood, resin, dark stain

Description:  This large and abstract style Chokwe figure with elongated barrel chest has curved arms carved close to the body.  The legs appear to have been broken at the thighs and mended while still in the village.   An old typed label on the base reads: Collected in General Machado (now Camacupa), central Angola in Dec. 1930 by Fritz Haas.  Given by native in return for medical help.  Sept. 21 1964 given by Fritz Haas to Alan Solem.  The legs have indigenous mends to both thighs evidenced by the natural pitch or resin.  It had acquired a dark varied patina turning to red.  Presented on a round Oak base dating to the time of collection.
