CHOKWE "MWENDUMBA" ANCESTOR MASK W/ FELINE PELT

Origin:  Zambia, Chokwe    (Provenance:  Acquired from an old collection in Greenwich Connecticut.  The deceased owner was an executive for IBM corporation.  This mask and the other one I'm selling were believed to have been collected at the same time)

Period/Date: First half of the 20th century (Not later than 1940s)

Materials: wood, fiber, natural pigments, adhesive resin, feline animal pelt (possibly Cheetah)

Description:  This fascinating and dramatic ancestral mask called a "Mwendumb", meaning Lion, would have been worn with a woven raffia body costume.  It is presented on a custom wood and metal display stand and features a striking spotted feline pelt for the headdress!  This mask resonates spiritual presence and still feels imbued with "juju".  It is in good condition showing obvious wear and use.

Dimensions:   Height 12"  (30.5 cm), Width 9"  (23 cm)
