19TH C. WHIMSICAL CHINESE SCULPTURE, BABY RESTING ON A FOO DOG
Origin: China (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection of quality Chinese art in Beverly Massachusetts) Period/Date: Qing Dynasty, likely early to Mid 19th century Materials: Hardwood, lacquer and gesso? Description: This expressive and whimsical carving depicts a smiling infant leaning on a "Foo Dog". The detail and craftsmanship seen in this sculpture, like the embroidered bib and clothing, are astonishing! Judging from the holes and pegs in its base it was apparent it was part of a larger structure. What is likely lost in the photos, is that this sculpture has great depth and volume to it and seems larger in person than its dimensions suggest. It has acquired a rich varied patina turning to red from long use. In good condition with some minor chips and age cracks. Dimensions: Height 12.5" (32 cm), Width 11.75" (30 cm), Depth 8.5" (22 cm) Price: $2400 Currency Conversion FREE SHIPPING With (Buy Now) Feature!
