STONE-CARVED HIGHLANDS CHIMBU HEADREST OF AN ANTEATER
Origin: New Guinea, Eastern Highlands, Chimbu People (Provenance: Provenance: Ex. collection of Dr. George Alan Solem (curator of invertebrates at the Field Museum of Natural History, Chicago) Dr. Solem died in 1990. It is believed that Dr. Solem likely acquired the neckrest from one of his favorite dealers in the late 1960's being Bud Holland in Chicago or J.J. Klejman in New York Period/Date: Likely early 20th century Materials: Mangrove tree root? Description: This dynamic headrest is a great example of the artistry found among the Chimbu (aka Simbu). The stylized animal is an "Echidna", also known as a Spiny Anteater. Archaic yet graceful, the artist has captured the true "essence" of the animal which was part of their creation myths and cosmology. Some of appendages have old chew marks and there is some old loss to the front legs which is worn down smooth to the touch. Some stable age cracks but in good condition overall showing long use.
