LONG GORGEOUS EAST AFRICAN BEADED PIPE STEM
Origin: Likely E. African, Unknown tribe (Provenance: Acquired by a client at a Butterfield and Butterfield auction 20 years ago in San Francisco) Period/Date: Early 20th century Materials: Hardwood, brass, copper, fiber, trade beads Description: This long and gorgeous pipe stem is meticulously embellished with trade beads. There is a layer of fiber underneath with strands of beads stitched onto it. Finally yards of copper or brass stripes were woven on top into a diamond pattern to secure the strands. The craftsmanship is very refined and beautifully worked. I've seen these is poor condition but this one is pristine!
