ELEGANT SLENDER ASMAT CITAK SHIELD

Origin:   Irian Jaya, South Western New Guinea, Eastern to North East Asmat, Area C Citak Region, Daykot Village  (Provenance: Acquired from an old Santa Barbara CA collection.  Complete details to be provided to buyer.  Originally purchased from a woman in Berkley CA, who made a trip deep into North East Region in 1970)

Period/Date:  Circa 1950s possibly older

Materials:  Mangrove wood, Lime, Ocher and charcoal pigments

Description:  Here's a terrific example of an Area C shield.  What makes it special is its elegant and slender free form shape.  It has a distinctive fluidity and harmony seldom seen with graphic deeply carved motif.  In addition, the shield is extremely thin which is a hallmark of quality and fine craftsmanship!   Although it is just 1/4"- 3/8" thick (1 cm) it is fire-hardened and amazingly strong.  It is in excellent condition retaining its bold pigments with no loss or restoration.  There is some curious doodling (done later) on the back side of figures and traditional motifs which likely served to pass time.  Presented on a custom wall mount.

A similar example can be seen on page 56 figure c of "Asmat Leben mit den Ahnen"

Dimensions:   Height 69.5"  (176 cm), Width 14.5"  (37 cm)
