UNUSUAL STYLE ASMAT MALE ANCESTOR FIGURE

Origin: Irian Jaya, Asmat People      (Provenance: Acquired from an old collection in Amsterdam)

Period/Date: 1940s

Materials: Reddish hardwood (Mangrove?), lime, ocher pigments

Description:  This uncommon style male ancestor figure has an expressive face with a wide grin and exposed tongue!  He has a wide stance and prominent phallus.  The artist paid careful attention to detail around the chin and jaw-line carefully defining it away from the neck.  It is in good condition with no damage.  It has a dry varied surface with a mellow luster on the high points.   Presented on a custom metal base.
