RARE ASMAT CROCODILE JAW BONE DAGGER

Item Code: MIS204-49

Origin:  Irian Jaya, Asmat People  (Provenance: Previously in the collection of an Italian Antique Dealer)

Description:  This dagger came from a collection of two others.  This one is from a smaller Crocodile and is not as early as the other two, so I've priced it accordingly.  These were not only used for warfare and raids but were also revered as significant wealth objects as well and were displayed at important ceremonies. This specimen has a harpoon like head with two barbs. Above that there is a smooth irregular hole. It is unknown if this was made intentionally or if the animals jaw was diseased? The Jawbone tapers toward the top which forms a nice handgrip. The top is embellished with woven bush string, red ochre pigment, Sago leaf fiber, seeds and tubular black reeds. In good condition with a fragment of one tooth remaining. A related example can be seen on page 70 of “Melanesia, A Short Ethnography” by B.A.L. Cranstone, 1961 The British Musuem.

Dimensions:  16.75” (42.5 cm) long by 2 3/8” (6cm) wide
