A RITUAL FISH SHAPE PAINTED BULLROARER

Origin:  Brazilian Amazon, Kayamura Tribe Xingú Region (Provenance: Previously owned by a Los Angeles Collector)

Description:   This impressive bullroarer is carved in the form of a fish and has applied white and black painted decoration on both sides.  It was ritually used by men only and women were to remain inside their houses not to see the sacred bullroarer.  When whirled around on a long cord it makes a loud humming sound, believed to be the sound of creation or the voice of the spirits themselves. Related examples can be seen on page 49 figure 70-72 of "Arts of the Amazon" by Barbara Braun.
