SMALL 19TH C. VICTORIA ABORIGINAL INCISED PARRYING SHIELD

Origin: S. Australia, Western Victoria   Provenance:  Ex. Christies Amsterdam, December 2000, Lot 537

Period/Date:   circa 1870-1890

Materials:  hardwood

Description:  This diminutive yet finely incised shield was likely used by a young initiate.  It is a smaller version of the full sized shields yet is just as fine and showing significant age and use.  It is stone adze hewn, however, the intricate cut scalloped patterns are metal carved.  Flathead screwdrivers were commonly traded to the Aboriginals who would promptly sharpen them into effective carving tools.  It is deeply patinated from long use.  Note the single elegant incised leaf on the bottom left side.  It is in excellent condition with light  abrasion and minor scratches.  There is a small dent to tip of one end.  Shields of this vintage and quality are bringing big money at auction and continue to appreciate in value.  A gorgeous example presented on a custom metal display stand.
